The Alps (Alpi, Alpen) are a huge mountain range in the middle of Europe stretching 1.200km from Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, Slovenia into Slovakia. The Dolomites or the Dolomiti are the southern part of the Alps into Italy. The Alps were since antiquity a natural barrier between the Romans on the Italian Peninsula and the Barbarians towards the north. High peaks of the Alps are the Matterhorn and the Mont Blanc (4,800m or 15,800 ft).
