The ceramics industry has huge potential that remains unrealised while the recent gas crisis is hampering production in the industries that run below their capacity, according to Bangladesh Ceramic Manufacturers and Exporters Association general secretary Irfan Uddin.
Irfan said that besides meeting local demand, they could export more through diversification of products if the government ensured uninterrupted gas and power supply.
The sector leader lent his view on the ceramics industry in an exclusive interview with New Age on Monday.
‘Our industry faces disruption to production for six to twelve hours due to energy crisis. Currently, we are even struggling to supply traditional products in local markets,’ he said.
Asked what kind of products the industries are producing at present, Irfan named tableware, sanitary ware and tiles, adding that they were exporting mainly tableware.
‘The pandemic impact coupled with recent energy crisis is hitting our industry hard. The cost of production is going high that will affect customers while products are damaged for lack of continuous gas supply as the ceramic items need to be burnt,’ he said.
Irfan, also director of FARR Ceramics Ltd, only porcelain tableware manufacturing plant in Bangladesh, explained that the quality of ceramic products highly depended on burning.
