If a horse's hooves are too long, it can interfere with their posture and stride. Therefore, horses need to undergo hoof trimming every 6 to 8 weeks. First, the old shoes are removed with tweezers. Then, the underside of the hoof is cleaned with a hoof pick and wire brush. Next, the soft webs on the sole are scraped with a hoof knife to reduce excessive pressure. Then, the elongated hooves are trimmed with a hoof nipper and flattened with a rasp to create a stable, symmetrical surface. Finally, the new shoe is fitted and nailed to the outside of the hoof, where there are no nerves, so the process is painless. Once the tip of the nail is bent and trimmed, the horse can get back on its feet.
