After the devastating earthquake, Syria is in dire need of help.
The death toll to date is around 10,000 people, many are still under the rubbles and many more are injured. Over 1,500 buildings were destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people found themselves on the street without a roof over their heads.
There is an acute shortage of
rescue equipment, medical diagnostic devices, surgical instruments, as well as other other crucial items such as infant formula, tents, warm clothes and blankets.
As a reporter covering the Syrian tragedy, I have visited this country several times since the beginning of The Astana process
As part of a private charity campaign, I delivered a batch of children's wheelchairs to Syria in 2020, and in 2021 returned to a Kazakh mother her two children, who were kidnapped and taken to the warring country.

I see how polarized our world is.
Everything is politicized - creative ideas, national, religious, gender identity and even humanitarian aid.
And in these most difficult and sad times, the voices of those who refuse to hate, but show love and care for strangers, can keep the hope alive. We should not allow ourselves to be deprived of humanity and a sense of mercy.
We must stand and fight for each other, support and help, creating strong bonds among ourselves not only in our families, but also within our society, country, and all over the world.
This is the only way we can survive as a human species.

I’ve seen firsthand that Syrians are a strong, courageous people with a deep sense of self-worth and pride for their country. They don't cry on cameras, they don't publish plaintive posts on social networks, begging the world for help.
They patiently heal the wounds inflicted by the war, endure hunger, cold and hardships, dig up, almost manually, the rubble after a terrible natural disaster and silently bury their dead, trusting only in the will of the higher powers. Syrian people have paid the highest and most terrible price in the war with the lives of their loved ones and they certainly deserve respect, mercy and opportunity to live in peace.
