Youssou N'Dour (born October 1, 1959) is a Senegalese singer, percussionist, songwriter, composer, actor, entrepreneur, and politician. The nightingale of Dakar is globally celebrated for his unique voice and contributions to music. In 2004, Rolling Stone described him as "perhaps the most famous singer alive in Senegal and much of Africa." His career began at a young age. At twelve, he was already performing, and soon he became a prominent member of the Star Band, one of the most popular groups in Senegal during the 1970s. In 1979, he founded his own band, Étoile de Dakar, which was later renamed The Super Étoile.
N'Dour is known as a pioneer of mbalax, a popular Senegalese music style that blends traditional rhythms with modern influences. His international breakthrough came through collaborations with artists such as Peter Gabriel, Neneh Cherry (hit single “7 Seconds”), and Wyclef Jean. He also worked with legendary artists like Sting, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, and Tracy Chapman. Youssou N'Dour released more than 45 albums. This live performance of “Mame Bamba” (the B-side of “7 Seconds”) is from the Grand Gala du Disc, the annual TV gala of AVRO Television in the Netherlands, on October 7, 1994.
