Suspect in murders of four Idaho college students to plead guilty

Bryan Kohberger, the former criminology PhD student accused of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022, has agreed to plead guilty in a deal that will spare him the death penalty, ABC News reported on Monday (June 30).

The plea agreement, reached just weeks before his trial was set to begin, would see Kohberger sentenced to four consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, and he would waive his right to appeal. Prosecutors reportedly informed victims' families of the deal in a letter, with sentencing expected in late July, pending a court hearing on Wednesday.

Kohberger, now 30, previously pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges in a case that drew national attention due to its brutality and mystery. He was a doctoral student at Washington State University at the time of the killings, which occurred in the nearby city of Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022.

The victims — three women who were roommates, and one of their boyfriends — were fatally stabbed in an off-campus home. Two other women in the house survived the attack.

The family of Kaylee Goncalves, one of the victims, publicly condemned the plea deal, writing on Facebook: “We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho. They have failed us.”

Neither Kohberger’s attorney nor the Idaho attorney general’s office have commented on the reported plea agreement.
