Throughout most of the 1980s Hip-Hop and R&B was underrepresented in pop culture. MTV limited play to certain shows and most local radio stations ignored the genres all together. The exceptions were of course the mega superstars of the decade such as Prince, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, not that these artists weren't deserving of the recognition. However Hip-Hop, Rap and Soul were still heard everywhere during these years...on portable "boombox" stereos. Cassettes and later CDs were popped into these massive, loud decks worldwide creating a radio station or club virtually anywhere. Most of the songs featured in this episode would not have achieved their popularity if not for the boost they received having been blasted from D battery powered mega radios. Many of these tracks eventually found their way to radio, music video and club success though none of this would have been possible if not for their boombox beginnings.
