I first heard Steve Earle as a kid. My dad introduced me to his music. I was drawn not only to his music, but also to his status as an outcast within country music.
Then, in the aftermath of 9/11, he had the courage to write songs that didn't parrot the prominent American narratives of the time. I'll always respect that about him.
