Between February and December 1981, ITN's Jon Snow reported on the ongoing civil war in the Central American nation of El Salvador. The decision by successive US presidents to support the military junta headed by President José Napoleón Duarte was closely scrutinised by the international press, as thousands of Salvadoran civilians became casualties of the government's brutal war against the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), a Soviet-backed coalition of left-wing guerrilla groups.
