It was the band's third studio album, with Jesse Colin Young leading the way in writing after co-founder Jerry Corbitt's departure.
Unlike its predecessors, the album consists of original songs without cover songs, and features various instruments and experimental sounds.
The flagship song "Darkness, Darkness" has since been covered by several artists, and the album has been named "Album 1001 Must Hear Before You Die."
Each album shows the diversity and experimentation of the psychedelic and folk rock genres of the late 1960s, which is an important material for understanding the flow of the music scene at the time.
