Who is Spiritbox? The history of the band and their Rise from humble beginnings to Modern Metal Titans-

Spiritbox is an absolute powerhouse. This Billboard-charting, Grammy-nominated band has been pushing metal into the mainstream in ways few modern bands have. But their journey to the top wasn’t an overnight success—it was built on years of dedication, struggle, and a relentless passion for music.

The Early Days: Two Paths Collide

Co-founders Michael Stringer and Courtney LaPlante were both drawn to music from a young age, sinking their teeth into the Vancouver Island metal scene as teenagers.

Michael played in Fall In Archaea, a band known for its technical prowess, crushing breakdowns, and relentless touring. Despite their dedication, they barely made enough money to scrape by but they were determined.

Courtney, on the other hand, was in Unicron, a fun experimental band she started with her brother and guitarist Jackson. Their sound ranged from heavy and chaotic to eerily somber, complimenting Courtney’s versatility as a vocalist.

Both Michael and Courtney had distinct musical identities from the start—so much so that echoes of their early projects can still be heard in Spiritbox’s sound today.

In 2008, fate brought them together at a local show where both their bands were playing. They quickly connected, bonding over their shared love of music. As time passed, their admiration turned into a relationship, and by 2012, they were engaged.

-The Iwrestledabearonce Era-

While working at Lululemon, Courtney received a life-changing call from the manager of The band iwrestledabearonce. They had just lost their vocalist due to pregnancy, and they needed an immediate replacement. Without hesitation, Courtney packed her bags and downloaded their songs learning them on her flight to join the band on Warped Tour.

This sudden opportunity meant that Courtney and Michael had to live in separate countries. But when iwabo needed a new guitarist, Courtney recommended Michael for the role. He joined the band, reuniting them on the road for the remainder of her two-years with the band.

-Spiritbox Is Born-

Eventually, both Michael and Courtney decided to leave iwrestledabearonce. Tired of the drama and tired of performing music written by past members, they craved something truly their own. So, they returned to Vancouver Island, and poured their experiences into a new project. Spiritbox was born.

Named after a device used to communicate with spirits, Spiritbox reflected the haunting, ethereal themes they wanted to explore. After eight months, they released their first self-made EP, funding it entirely with money they received from their wedding.

For years, the duo remained fully independent—writing, recording, producing, filming and editing music videos.

-The Breakthrough: “Holy Roller”-

One of those DIY projects was the music video for Holy Roller. It was originally just a fun song called holey moley and was used to extend their live set, but once this short, brutal track was released, it exploded and became a turning point for the band.

The video caught the attention of numerous reaction channels on YouTube and even SiriusXM’s José Mangin (man-g-in), who played it on the radio, amplifying their exposure beyond anything they had anticipated. Suddenly, Spiritbox wasn’t just an underground sensation—they were the band to watch.

-Eternal Blue: A Game-Changer-

As anticipation for their debut album grew, the world shut down due to the pandemic. Undeterred, Spiritbox recorded Eternal Blue in an Airbnb kitchen, collaborating with their producer over Zoom.

They didn’t want to create an album that followed trends or stuck to a formula—they wanted a record that was musically fulfilling, blending their influences without boundaries.

When Eternal Blue finally dropped in 2021, it debuted at #13 on the Billboard 200, a staggering achievement for an independent metal band. From there, their career skyrocketed—tours with metal giants, multiple Grammy nominations, and even an unexpected collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion.

-The Future of Spiritbox-

Their next EPs, Rotoscope and The fear of fear, showcased their evolving sound, further fueling anticipation for their sophomore album. This time, their goal was to challenge themselves, crafting songs that listeners could truly lose themselves in.

And with Tsunami Sea already making waves, it’s clear that Spiritbox is delivering on that promise.

Their journey has been nothing short of inspiring—from a small island in Canada to the global stage, they’ve proven that passion and perseverance can lead to something truly extraordinary.

And it seems like, this is only the beginning.
