In 2017, the government of Peru declared a state of emergency. The Coastal El Niño phenomenon produced a catastrophe. Over 160 fatalities, 1.5 million people affected, 280,000 suffered losses.
The Coastal El Niño phenomenon arises due to anomalous warming of the sea to over 25ºC. The city of Piura, in northern Peru, was the area most affected by the Coastal El Niño. The project will improve sanitation and access to drinking water in the communities of Chato Grande and Chato Chico. The new infrastructure will be operational in 2020. The project will benefit a total of 1,082 people.
