Years ago, I came up with a linear funk groove called the "Katz Pajamas" because it inspired by one of my old teachers and linear monster, Frank Katz. I've used the beginning of the phrase to come up with grooves in different feels and this time, I'm using it to start off this 3/2 son clave driven N'awlins groove. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "&" of 2, the "&" of 3, and on 4, with a ruff that starts on the snare and falls into the bass drum on the "&" of 3. Looking at the hi-hats next, we have notes falling on the "e" of 1, on 2 and the "a" of 2, the "&" of 3, and on the "&" of 4, with the "a" of 2 and the "&" of 4 played as open notes. Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on the "&" of 1 and on the "&" of 4, with a lone ghost note on the "e" of 2. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!
