So why does the Hawaiian Flag contain the British Union Jack? Well, the history of the Flag of Hawaii starts with the friendship between the legendary Hawaiian ruler, Kamehameha the Great, and the British Explorer, George Vancouver. While Hawaii was never actually a British Colony, it did develop a friendly relationship with Britain. In 1793, Captain George Vancouver presented King Kamehameha I with a Red Ensign of the Royal Navy, and that flag that would go on to inspire the Hawaiian flag. #hawaii #history #usa #flag #vexillology
