Description:

Right in the middle of the United Kingdom, there is a river called Tweed that forms part of the border between Scotland and England. This border has shifted many times throughout history, significantly impacting the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, located at the river's mouth.

Berwick-upon-Tweed changed hands 13 times between Scotland and England until it was finally surrendered to England in 1482. The town's uncertain national allegiance led to a unique historical anecdote during the Crimean War against Russia in 1853. Queen Victoria reportedly signed the war declaration as "Victoria, Queen of Great Britain, Ireland, Berwick-upon-Tweed, and all British Dominions," due to Berwick's ambiguous status.

When the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1856, Berwick-upon-Tweed was left out of the text, technically leaving it still at war with Russia. This peculiar situation continued until 1966, when a Soviet peace delegation signed a peace treaty with Berwick-upon-Tweed, allowing USSR citizens to finally sleep peacefully.

Join us as we explore the fascinating and little-known history of Berwick-upon-Tweed, the town that remained at war with Russia for over a century!

Right in the middle of the United Kingdom, there is this river called Tweed that is actually part of the border between Scotland and England,
but it wasn't always like that as the two countries changed their borders many times. The most affected by those changes was the town located right
at the mouth of the river. This is Berwick-upon-Tweed, a small town which had to change sides 13 times between Scotland and England until 1482 when
it was finally surrendered to England.
Because of the uncertainty of Berwick's
mother country, the war declaration of the Crimean War against Russia in 1853, was supposedly signed by Queen Victoria as "Victoria, Queen of Great Britain,
Ireland, Berwick-upon-Tweed, and all British Dominions." In 1856, when the Treaty of Paris was signed, Berwick-upon-Tweed was left out of the text, thus meaning
it was still at war with Russia. This was until 1966 when a Soviet peace delegation signed a peace treaty between Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Soviet Union, and
the USSR citizens could finally sleep peacefully.
