In this video we'll have a look on how portugal can actualy double its territory. I'm not talking here about land borders expansion, but about the maritime borders.
Because Portugal owns the Madeira Islands and The Azores Archipelago it can actually claim the Continental Shelf around this islands as the water there is preaty shallow and no other country has land possesions in the region.
It's interesting that Portugal already initiated the claim but this is still in review. If this claim will be granted, Portugal will more than double its territory.

Portugal want to double its territory, here’s how.
The Portuguese republic consists of three territories: The continental Portugal, The Madeira Island Chain and The Azores Archipelago located deep into the Atlantic Ocean.
Portugal territorial waters extend 22.2 kilometers from the coast, for both the continental Portugal as well as for the two autonomous units. The seabed and the airspace within this territorial waters is sovereign territory of Portugal.
The exclusive economic zone extends 370.4 kilometers from the coast allowing Portugal to have exclusive rights over the resources inside.
But in maritime border law there is another type of border that Portugal can and want to claim. The continental shelf. This represents that portion of the continent that is submerged under an area or relatively shallow water. The claimable area is limited to 648 kilometers beyond the coast.
If this claim will be validated, Portugal will more that double its territory.
