Salt-N-Pepa was formed in New York in 1985 by Cheryl James(Salt) and Sandra Denton(Pepa) and they added Deidra Roper( DJ Spinderella) shortly after. They were the first female rap group to achieve platinum status status commercially. Whatta Man, incorporated Lynda Lyndell's 1969 Stax hit, What A Man, into the updated rap format upon it's release in 1993. The song entered the Billboard chart in January of 1994 and peaked at #3.
