Speaking in Ottawa on Wednesday, Minister of Emergency Preparedness Harjit Sajjan, Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment Steven Guilbeault and Minister of Indigenous Services Patty Hajdu provided a wildfire forecast and update for Canada.

Sajjan said that the number of fires is “well-below average for this time of the year” and “well-below the 10-year average for the total area burned.” However, he still outlined a number of locations that were areas of concern and urged Canadians to be prepared through the FireSmart program.

Wilkinson added that the current expected areas of highest fire risk have shifted from British Columbia to the prairie provinces and to the majority of the Northwest Territories, with a “higher likelihood of above-normal fire activity” across all of Canada for June. Wilkinson also said that fire activity is possible from Yukon, eastern B.C. and western Quebec for July.

To follow up, Guilbeault highlighted a number of recent federal government initiatives to address these fire risk concerns, including a heat wave attribution pilot, improvements to its air quality forecasting model and a new Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation initiative.
