On 20 September 1965, 25-year-old mathematician Stanislaus Gefroerer escaped from East Berlin by climbing over the Berlin Wall. Assisted by friends of his fiancée, Ingrid Paulisch, Gefroerer was able to scale the wall using a specially-built hinged ladder apparently inspired by British train robber Ronnie Biggs. Gefroerer's successful escape gave ITN an opportunity to report on the growing number of attempts being made by East Berliners to escape to the West, from remarkable successes to tragic failures.
