Can you wash off pesticides on your produce?

It never fails that people are in our comments telling us that pesticides are absorbed into the fruit so you can't wash them off. 

Tell you what, we aren't willing to take that chance and will die on our white vinegar or baking soda soak for all of our produce before eating it. 

What do you think? Is washing fruit necessary or a total waste of time?
