Our chestnut parquet floor was caked in the detritus of decorating. There was no way it could be bought back to life. The boards were originally cut with an axe and were very distorted. Broken windows, missing boilers, rodent and insect infestations had all left stains, scratches and holes.
Having used huge industrial floor sanders in the past, I knew their limitations and issues, so I opted to simply use a much smaller orbital wall and ceiling sander we had purchased for another job. The process was more controllable and produced less dust.
The final result took 6 hours for a 16m sq. room. Although, arguably not to professional standards; which would be very hard given that the planks varied in thickness by up to 10mm; the finish was simply astonishing.
The floor certainly still showed it's 150 years. It had tons of character left, but it was also still slippery smooth underfoot. With the wonky board edges and odd knock or two it had patina by the bucket load.
With the floor finished, we can begin trawling the Brocantes again for characterful furniture and fill the bedroom with antique rugs, lamps and a splash of colour.
Over the next couple of weeks we'll hopefully go paint shopping.
