Last Saturday, the vibrant narrative of Opobo came to life at Alexis Galleries in Victoria Island, Lagos, with the debut solo exhibition of paintings by Ibim Cookey, titled "King Jaja." Sponsored by prominent brands, including The Macallan, Coca-Cola, and The Guardian, this exhibition, curated by Sabo Kpade, showcases Cookey's exploration of history, identity, and power through his artwork. The exhibition runs from January 18 to February 1, 2025, and celebrates the legacy of Jubo Jubogha ‘Jaja,’ the founder and first king of the Opobo Kingdom. Born in 1821, Jaja's story is deeply intertwined with the 19th-century history of the region, highlighting his transition from the Igbo to the Ijaw people.
