Cliff Richard was born Harry Rodger Webb in 1940. He is the third most popular artist in the history of the UK singles chart, following The Beatles and Elvis Presley. Throughout his career spanning over sixty years, Richard has established himself as a unique figure through his achievements in music, his life philosophy, and his personal beliefs. Family and faith have played a significant role in his life. Although he once considered quitting rock ‘n’ roll due to concerns about his future, he revived his career based on his Christian faith, recording songs that promote Christian messages and continuing his musical activities in tandem with his faith.
He has explained why he never married, "I've fallen in love many times, but marriage is a big responsibility. As an artist, it takes up a lot of time." This industry can be very destructive." Richard expressed concern about the sexually explicit public image of singer Miley Cyrus, following controversy surrounding a semi-naked video for her song "Wrecking Ball". In the 1970s, Richard said that he was disturbed by the visual imagery and mock horror of singer Alice Cooper. In 1997, Richard said of the rock band Oasis: "It's just a shame that part of what gives them their kick is their self-destructive impulse."

In an article for The Guardian in 2011, the journalist Sam Leith wrote of Richard's lack of commercial support among radio stations: "His uncompromising Christianity, his clean-living ways, and his connoisseurship of the fruits of his Portuguese winery have made him an object of incomprehension, even ridicule, for the uncultured, alcopop-drinking younger generation."
Also writing in The Guardian, John Robb opined that because Richard has rebelled against the drink and drugs culture of typical rock stars, this "rebelling against rebellion" has made Richard something of a countercultural icon.

He has maintained deep friendships with family and friends and has devoted much time and energy to charity work and social service. Supporting various charities, visiting churches, hospitals, and engaging in sports activities have been an important part of his life, reflecting his commitment to social responsibility. He has consistently avoided drugs and promiscuity, striving to maintain moral integrity.

He is strongly opposed to media exposure of his private life through photographs or articles, and over the years, he has worked hard to protect his privacy. Even during the police investigation and broadcast controversies in 2014, he repeatedly claimed his innocence and actively worked to restore his reputation through legal means. Following these events, he was officially cleared of all allegations, and he responded actively to defend his reputation.
