📝: During an interview with the TODAY Show called "mgk on 'Cliché' Pick Up Lines & Life as a Cat Dad | 8 Before 8," mgk explained why he changed his stage name from "Machine Gun Kelly" to "mgk" all lowercase. The question was "You recently shortened your stage name to mgk. what was the significance behind that?"
mgk said, "These are good questions. Machine Gun Kelly, I was bestowed that name. It was derived from a mobster, so it wasn't technically my name. And I think ultimately that was a character. I think now I've infused the artist with the human, so I am mgk, and mgk all lowercase just very much more matches who I am now."
In February 2024, mgk's artist name was officially changed from "Machine Gun Kelly" to "mgk" on platforms such as Spotify.
At the GQ Men of the Year event in November 2023, mgk asked the photographers to call him just "Machine." mgk said, "Can you just hit me with the machine from now on?" mgk didn't change his artist name at the time.
FYI: Two fans claimed that they influenced mgk to change his stage name, but their claim is proven to be false. Chad and JT posted a video suggesting they were the ones who inspired mgk to change his name. In the video, they attended mgk's concert and urged him to change his name. However, the video was heavily edited and differed significantly from other videos of the same moment filmed by other audience members. Even a People article (titled "Machine Gun Kelly Seems to Joke About Changing His Stage Name to Just 'Machine'") pointd out that "their videos are heavily edited." Therefore, their claim that they influenced mgk's name change is false.
