It doesn't help that the media perpetuates misconceptions about OCD. OCD is not entertaining or funny, and it's not anything like what the media depicts. The media tends to depict sensationalized caricatures that do not accurately represent those living with OCD.
Here are the defining experiences of OCD:
-Intense anxiety and fear
-Painful, intrusive thoughts
-Rituals and compulsive behaviors that the person feels unable to control
-Frustration and shame that their fears and compulsive actions feel like they do not make sense
OCD is an intense, pervasive experience. It is not a quirky behavior that a person is sometimes "choosing" to do. And they are NOT crazy. Rather, when someone has OCD, something is happening TO them. BUT the good news is that there IS something they can do about it.
Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy is an evidence-based treatment that can help those with OCD develop the skills they need to overcome!
