The West has often viewed Africa as a “backward continent” without the capacity to contribute or lead in meaningful change. However, since January 2024, South Africa has taken the mantle to change this narrative by taking Israel to the International Court of Justice, for genocide in its war against Palestine. And, despite of the United States' response and even threat to cut off South Africa from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) preferential trade program, South Africa led by President Cyril Ramaphosa and its Foreign Affairs Minister, Naledi Pandor, has stood firm and strong on its belief that Israel is commuting genocide in the Israeli-Palestinian war. South Africa’s action has been applauded and supported both at home and within the African continent. However, some believe that the ANC, led by President Ramaphosa is using the ICJ case to escape pressure from home where unemployment has increased drastically, there are persistent economic inequalities, corruption allegations, and frequent power cuts. It has also been touted that the ANC is using the ICJ case to sway voters to its side because its popularity has drastically dropped. So, the question is “How is the Israeli-Palestinian war relevant to South Africa’s upcoming election? And, how will it affect South Africa’s vote?
