Baconsthorpe Castle is intimately linked to the dramatic rise and fall of the Heydon family, who lived there for 200 years. They built the castle as their main residence in about 1450 and the castle became larger and more elaborate as the family's wealth grew. But over the years the family accumulated large debts and by the mid-17th century the Heydons were forced to demolish much of the castle and sell off the materials. The castle has since become a ruin and is subject to significant wear to its exposed walls. Learn more about the conservation work we are doing to protect the castle for future generations.
