The seguiriya is one of the oldest flamenco styles (“palos”) known, belonging to the “cante jondo” category. a form of singing that is dramatic, powerful, sombre and desolating, and must be performed with great feeling and temperament.
Seguiriyas (12-stroke metric style) have very few lyrics and lots of wailing and are difficult to interpret. They reflect the suffering of human relationships, love and death. They appeared in the late eighteenth century and became more widespread at the start of the nineteenth century.
