Every afternoon, as the sun starts to set, the Flag Retreat Ceremony begins.
As Lupang Hinirang plays, people stand still in respect.
Civilians place their right hand on their chest.
Uniformed personnel give a salute.
The flag is lowered slowly perfectly in sync with the anthem’s final note. Two people catch it making sure it never touches the ground.
It’s held like this, then folded in half — lengthwise, twice. Starting from the end, one corner is folded into a triangle. Continue folding in a triangular manner until the entire flag is folded. The final fold shows one star and a bit of blue.
Everyone stays silent, until the flag is fully folded.
A small moment that carries big respect.
