The Secret to Make ANY Drum Groove Sound EPIC are 2 things that I do all the time.
1) I replace a lot of my kick patterns with my left foot, so I end up getting a completely different sound. I get a hi-hat ghost note type of sound that morphs the groove into something else.

2) The 2nd thing I do if you guys haven't realized yet is that I have a crippling cowbell addiction :) Putting anything on your snare will automatically change the way you play. Because you're technically putting something on your drum and you would want to incorporate it into whatever you're playing.
In my case, I always like putting a cowbell on the snare and replacing my ghost notes with cowbell hits.
