Todays Video is on Chlorophytum or the Spider plant which is another favourite plant in home gardeners collection. How to grow, care and propagate the Spider plant and also how to do spider plant babies repotting.

Chlorophytum comosum, commonly called as the spider plant but also known as airplane plant, St. Bernard's lily, spider ivy, ribbon plant, and hen and chickens plant. It is a perennial plant and native to south Africa, but now found throughout the world.
The characteristic feature of this plant is its leaves which are long and narrow and may be green or variegated as seen here. Its commonly grown in hanging pots.
Now the interesting aspect of this plant - Many of us may not be aware that it is a flowering plant as you can see in the image and it is a long branched flower which actually the starters of its babies or offsets. The spider plant is so named because of its spider-like offsets or babies known as spiderettes, which dangle down from the mother plant like spiders on a web.

Now on the Care and Growing Tips for Spider plant:
Its is another easy to grow plant and very much tolerant to rough handling. So another best plant for beginners or newbie gardeners to start.
1. Sunlight requirement for the spider plant is Bright Indirect Sunlight is best for it and also it enjoys slightly cooler temperatures. Too much direct sunlight may bleach the leaves and burn the plant.
2. Watering is required for this plant on daily basis , but no overwatering or soggy soil.
3. Fertilizers like NPK crystals certainly benefit the growth, you can add 5 – 6 NPK crystals in the pot once a month.
4. Pruning is rarely required. But you need to remove dry or dead leaves from time to time.
5. The plant is prone to Spider mites on the underside of the leaves which may hamper the growth. In this case you might use neem oil spray once weekly until the problem resolves.
6. Repotting spider plants is rarely required only when the plant bases completely fill the container and there is root bounding and no growth.
Now the Propagation of Spider Plant: That’s by 2 methods:
The Offset babies or Spiderettes, as discussed earlier are easiest method to separate from the mother plant and insert them independently and they should start growth easily.
The second method is How to grow spider plant from cuttings - its actually DIVIDING the spider plant by cutting the root ball with a knife and then planting each part separately. This you can try in root bound plants or if the plant has overgrown the pot.
