-- ENG -- Sometimes there are improbable and magnificent artistic and human encounters. This was the case during our friendly interview in spring 2025 with the very humble Olav Luksengård Mjelva for his fantastical project called AFARGANG @afargangofficial. He is releasing his first solo album entitled Andvake (@bynorsemusic3060).
This Norwegian artist is not entirely unknown, however, since he has already been playing the typically Norwegian fiddle ("hardanger") for many years on the Scandinavian folk/pop rock scene, while also long-time associates with some veterans of the Norwegian black metal or neo-folk scene (like our friends Ivar Bjornson/ENSLAVED, Einar Selvik/ex-GORGOROTH, @wardruna, etc.). He has notably participated closely (in the studio or live) in the successive projects SKUGGSJÁ, and HUGSJÁ. So here he is alone with AFARGANG, well not quite since he brilliantly knew how to surround himself with musicians and a second singer (as reinforcement for the black metal vocals) for a magnificent result, filled with both groove and a sweet melancholy, sometimes dark, but truly touching. Between traditional folk, rock, and atmopspheric black metal… Not to be missed especially since a second opus is already in the works !

-- FR -- Il y a parfois des rencontres artistiques et humaines improbables et magnifiques. Ce fut le cas lors de notre sympathique entretien au printemps 2025 avec le très humble Olav Luksengård Mjelva pour son fantastique projet nommé AFARGANG. Il publie son 1er album solo intitulé Andvake (@bynorsemusic3060).
Cet artiste norvégien n’est pas totalement un inconnu au bataillon cependant puisqu’il pratique déjà depuis bon nombre d’années le violon typiquement norvégien (« hardanger fiddle ») sur la scène folk/pop rock scandinave, tout en fréquentant depuis longtemps certains vétérans de la scène black metal ou néo folk norvégienne (comme nos amis Ivar Bjornson/@enslaved, Einar Selvik/ex-GORGOROTH, @wardruna, etc.). Il a notamment participé de près de loin (en studio ou en live) aux projets successifs SKUGGSJÁ et HUGSJÁ.
Le voilà donc en solitaire avec AFARGANG, enfin pas tout à fait puisqu’il a su avec brio s’entourer de musiciens et d’un second chanteur (en renfort pour le chant black metal) pour un résultat magnifique, empli à la fois de groove et d’une douce mélancolie, parfois sombre, mais réellement touchante. Entre folk traditionnel, rock, et black metal atmosphérique… A ne pas manquer surtout qu’un second opus est déjà dans les cartons !
