“The lake is still, the chain is deep –
And lovers drown where none dare sleep.”

In a village lost to time and mist, a wanderer meets a strange and sorrowful maiden by the banks of a black and silent lake. Beneath its surface lies a rusted chain – and with it, a curse as old as sin. She is bound to its iron will. He, in love, would free her. But the lake remembers… and it does not let go.

This is Thorns of Vespertine cast adrift in dark waters – for listeners who would choose love, even as it pulls them down.

There lies a lake, both still and black as pitch,
Where none do swim, nor ever dare to fish.
A cottage stands beside its weeping shore –
Where chains do sleep, and knock upon the floor.

O maid of dusk, with silence in thine eye,
What storm hath chain’d thy soul to mist and sigh?
Thou speak’st in dreams, and walk’st as if in trance –
Yet still I stay, enraptur’d by thy glance.

Good sir, I beg, go not toward yond shore,
Where iron rusts and secrets lie in store.
For in that lake lies doom, in shadow seal’d –
And I, by vow and chain, am never heal’d.

What chain is this that bites the murky wave?
What name lies bound within that wat’ry grave?
Speak true, my love – thy tale I wish to know.
For thou art pale, and weep’st when moon doth glow.

A sin was wrought by hands that look’d like mine –
In days long lost, ‘neath blood and ash and brine.
To save a soul, I gave what none could take –
My breath was sold, and bound unto the lake.

Then let me break the chain and set thee free!
No curse shall stand ‘twixt love and such as we.
I’ll pull the links from out their murky bed –
And make thee living, not among the dead.

If thou dost touch the chain, thy days are done.
No man returns once drowning hath begun.
The lake remembers all who seek its womb –
Thy name shall sleep within its iron tomb.

Then so be it – for what is life, unshared?
A breath alone is less than death declared.
If thou art kept by waters black and still,
Then I shall join, by oath and loving will.

No more, sweet fool! The chain doth stir and wake…
It knows thy voice… it pulls beneath the lake.
Yet hold me now, and may our sorrow cease –
Two hearts may drown, but drown at last in peace.

They found no boat, nor blood, nor stone, nor scream —
Just ripples fading, lost into a dream.
And by the shore, where reeds in silence ache –
Still rusts the chain beneath the haunted lake.
