Description:

Why do Spain and Portugal both claim the town of Olivença? The border between these two countries is one of the oldest geopolitical borders in the world, almost identical to the one defined in 1297. However, for an 18-kilometer stretch, the border remains undefined. This is due to the town of Olivença, which was under Portuguese sovereignty from 1297 until 1801, when Spanish and French troops took the town during the War of the Oranges.

In 1815, the Treaty of Vienna saw Spain promise to return Olivença to Portugal, but this promise was never fulfilled. Despite both Spain and Portugal being part of the EU and the Schengen Area, where borders are practically non-existent, this issue remains a border dispute. Portugal does not recognize Spanish sovereignty over Olivença, making it one of the few border disputes in Western Europe.

Transcript:

Why Spain and Portugal are both claiming this town? You see, the border between Spain and Portugal is almost identical as the one defined in 1297, being the oldest geopolitical border in the world, after the border of Andorra.
But for 18 kilometers, the border is not defined and this is because Olivença was under Portuguese sovereignty from 1297 until 1801 when the Spanish and French troops took the town during the war of the oranges.
In 1815, during the Vienna Treaty, Spain promised to give the city of Olivença back to Portugal, but this never happened.
Although both Spain and Portugal are part of EU and Schengen Area and the border is practically not existent, this still represents a border dispute as Portugal does not recognize Spanish sovereignty over the territory. This is one of the few border disputes in western Europe, do you know others?
