Former foreign affairs minister Alexander Downer says the US would’ve “raised an eyebrow” for the way Australia handled Chinese warships circling the country.

Mr Downer told Sky News Australia that a country with a “serious defence force” would’ve monitored a similar situation more closely.

“Would’ve known all about its activities.”
