Diving the Matterhorn with an FPV Drone
Welcome to the scariest FPV Drone flight of my life. Diving the Matterhorn mountain in Zermatt, Switzerland.
A bucket list shot I have been wanting to capture for a number of years now and just last week in February 2024, I got the opportunity to.
Over 3 months of preparation went into this shot. Long Range FPV is an entirely different discipline to normal cinematic fpv flying. It requires meticulous knowledge of battery management, positioning and weather to carry out a safe flight and ensure the drone makes it home. I have been flying long range FPV for nearly 2 years now with 7-9inch quads. Everything you see in the video is custom built; the drone, batteries & camera mounts that enabled me to be able to capture the shot. The Matterhorn sits over 4.5km away (from Schwarzee Gondola Station) and at an elevation of 4474m which makes it a very challenging peak to fly to with a drone.
I used a custom built 8 inch FPV drone with a 6s2p 9000mah li-ion battery that I built for maximum range. The recording camera was the @gopro 12 and the BTS pole cam was a RunCam Thumb Pro.
The flight took around 15mins in total and the maximum speed I reached was 142km/h on the descent. My drone was pushed to the limits as the winds at the top of the Matterhorn were extremely challenging, blowing at over 25knots. BUT I managed to pull it off and get a nice clean dive down to the bottom 😅💪🚁
Be sure to drop a follow if you enjoyed and stay tuned for my next reels from Switzerland 🇨🇭 I’m also on YouTube where you’ll be able to find my full FPV Vlog from this trip very soon 👀🎥
(We even had a drone crash during a summit attempt which led to a bug rescue mission 👀🫣)
Drop me any questions you have about the Drone used or the flight down in the comments 🙂⬇️
