Creative Artificial Intelligence - Meet Harold Cohen

We’re missing the point of Artificial Intelligence. Thinking is more than assembling patterns made from already created material. I recently saw some of the works of Harold Cohen, who created an AI-driven device that produces original art in his style, called AARON, in 1973.
The important thing is the difference between what he did with art, (and Terry Winograd with language, and Jerry Weisenberg with conversation) and what LLMs do today.
Here, the goal was to use the computer to understand cognition, and, as a side effect, develop something like artificial intelligence. Today LLMs use massive probabilistic schemes to come up with an average sentence. The end game would be an LLM that develops the ultimate sentence containing the statistical average of all human written knowledge, and it would be unintelligible. A functional AI would be able to create, rather than average among a predefined set of knowledge. What Harold’s AARON does is create, following the rules of painting, rather than copy and average among preexisting works. To believe that an LLM (or its cognates) does is creative misunderstands the creative process.
