Egg laying hens are usually caged in huge sheds containing up to 100,000 hens, with up to 20 hens per cage where they stand on wire grills which allow their urine and faeces to drop through. For their entire time on Planet Earth most laying hens sit smelling the acrid stench of urine and faeces whilst creating 30 times as many eggs in a year than they would naturally do. For the hens it is like having a period every day. The constant depletion of calcium from their bodies to create the eggs and the poor conditions cause legs to break and feathers to drop out.
Although hens can live for 10 years or more, laying hens are murdered at around 18 months old - the equivalent of a 12 year old pre-teen. Most are violently packed into crates by piece rate workers then transported to the killing factory where they are strung upside down by their legs on an automated conveyor belt. The conveyor drags their heads through an electrified bath designed to stun them but many hens simply lift their head to avoid it, and remain fully conscious as their necks are subsequently dragged across a sharp blade to murder them. Any who manage to avoid the blade have a knife stuck in their throats.
These beautiful ladies deserve much better from us. Who do we think we are that we can abuse them like this? Give up eggs and leave the hens alone. Go vegan today!

All of this violence only occurs because people continue to buy a product that is wholly unnecessary for human survival and that is in fact linked with many chronic and fatal diseases in humans. The cholesterol in eggs can cause heart disease, diabetes, cancer, dementia, heart attack and stroke. Each egg contains almost 3 times the cholesterol in a Big Mac.
Male chicks are of no use to the egg industry as they can't lay eggs and have not been bred to put on weight quickly, unlike those bred for their flesh. As a result, in the US, 200 Million one day old male chicks are murdered every year. Most are dropped alive into a grinder that tears their bodies apart. The rest are usually gassed. The gas takes a couple of minutes to murder them. It is a horrible death. In total, *more than half a million one day old male chicks are murdered every single day* .
