(26 Apr 1976) RR7617A GUATEMALA: QUAKE REPORT
At 3 o'clock in the morning on February 4th 1976, a 35-second earthquake hit Guatemala and left many
of its towns and cities in ruins. 20,000 people died, 60,000 were injured and one million made homeless.
Now, three months after the disaster, a reconstruction and relief programme is in full swing. American Army technicians are rebuilding bridges and roads and various international charities are tackling problems in the outlying villages. This report looks at the damage in several badly-hit areas and at the progress of reconstruction.
