Retro Release: 41 years ago today—on July 27, 1984—Metallica released Ride The Lightning, their second studio album produced by Flemming Rasmussen and the band, recorded February–March 1984 at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen.

A definitive leap forward for thrash metal, Ride The Lightning balances raw aggression with evolving songwriting— from the ominous gallop of “For Whom The Bell Tolls” and the haunting ballad “Fade To Black” to the relentless march of “Creeping Death”, showcasing James Hetfield’s fierce vocals and Kirk Hammett’s melodic leads.

It peaked at No. 100 on the US Billboard 200, has since been certified 6× Platinum by the RIAA, and is celebrated as one of Metallica’s most influential works.
