The easiest alternate tuning to wrap my head around is Dropped D. It only requires detuning one string (the low 6th string) down a whole step from E to D.
Not long ago, I regarded Dropped D tuning as a strictly metal and hard rock tuning. But, after digging in to old blues over the past few years, I hear it used frequently by great blues pickers. The most notable dropped D tune that comes to mind is Blind Boy Fuller's great song, Statesboro Blues.
In this lesson, we'll spend a quick second covering how to tune your guitar to dropped D and then we'll look at 7 different D and D7 chord shapes that work incredibly well for acoustic fingerpickers in Dropped D.
