Kansas and Ar… kansas? Or is it Arkansaw? Well, believe it or not, people used to call it both because their spelling and pronunciation line up. So it’s just bizarre as to why, in 1881, its state legislature declared itself “ar-kin-saw” with this spelling.

So why did they do that? Do Kansas and Arkansas come from the same word? And why are they pronounced so differently?
