As the Bangla New Year, which falls on 14 April, knocks on the door, preparations are in full swing by the teachers and students of the Fine Art Institute of Dhaka University, along with others.
As part of the celebrations, the institute has traditionally welcomed the first day of the Bangla New Year, known as Pahela Baishakh, with a colourful procession displaying various motifs for decades.
The procession, which is close to the hearts of the Bangali people, was once known as Ananda shovajatra and later as Mangal Shobhajatra.
It was recognised by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.
This year, the Dhaka University authorities have renamed the procession Barshabaran Ananda Shobhajatra to herald the Bangla year 1432.
The festival, celebrated for hundreds of years, now also represents solidarity and shared democratic values, uniting people irrespective of faith.
The procession is an impressive display of giant replicas of imaginary or mythical creatures, animal figures, masks, and floats depicting the cultural roots of the country’s folk heritage, interwoven with various faiths and ethnicities.
Preparations for the traditional Ananda Shobhajatra are in their final stage.
Artists are working day and night, giving their best to uphold the spirit of the festival.
Bright murals now cover the front walls of the Faculty building. Bold brushstrokes and vibrant colours reflect the festive mood. Each mural tells a story of joy, hope, and tradition.
Sculptors are building large figures for the procession.
These include the traditional palanquin, the iconic hilsa fish, and symbolic figures representing good and evil.
They symbolise the struggles and dreams of the Bengali people.
Inside the institute, students are also crafting masks and paper structures, including elephants, horses, and birds.
Painters are also working on Pattachitra, a traditional form of scroll painting on cloth.
These scrolls depict scenes from Bengali folk tales—stories of Behula-Lakhindar, tales of Gazi Pir, and rural myths—in detail.
This year, the organisers will also highlight the July–August uprising and the fall of the autocratic regime led by Sheikh Hasina, marking the beginning of a new era in the country’s politics.
