Come join us for this Vancouver Island travel vlog as we highlight our journey driving on a rainy day taking detours on loggings roads en route from Port Alice to Comox. Some of the highlights include stops in Woss, Schoen Lake and Sayward along the way. Let me warn you guys, you’re in for a lot of rain on this episode! The plan was to drive from Port Alice to Comox, while taking a few detours to go hiking, but that didn’t happen. The weather had other plans and since there was a bit of a deluge going on and we kinda wanted to stay dry, we had to adapt. So, if you’re down for some adventuring down logging roads, random car chats, and a cute deer or two, then come and join us for this rainy day of driving.

After a quick lunch stop in the town of Woss, we continued our off-road adventures on Vancouver Island down bumpy roads on our way to Schoen Lake. We almost didn't make it given the weather conditions!

We then got back on the highway and tried to tack on a few more kilometres before our next stop in Sayward, which we had been told is a good place to try and see elk. Well, I think the elk were probably hiding from the rain, but we did see a cute deer munching on a perfectly manicured garden, so that made it up for it.

And that was that. We continued straight down to Comox, where we checked in to our home for the night and proceeded to order Sam’s favourite take out: pizza! Stay tuned as we'll have more Vancouver Island travel videos from Parksville, Campbell River, Nanaimo and Victoria coming out soon.

Rainy Vancouver Island Road Trip: Port Alice to Comox, Logging Roads, Wildlife & Pizza Night 🌧️🦌🍕 | Ultimate Guide to Driving Vancouver Island in Wet Weather

🌦️ Setting Out from Port Alice: Goodbye to the North, Hello to the Rainy Road South 🚗🌲

We kicked off our journey by leaving Port Alice after an incredible four-night adventure in the northern part of Vancouver Island. Our plan was to drive south towards Comox and the Courtenay area, where we’d base ourselves for the next four days. The drive would normally take about three and a half hours, but we were ready for detours, pit stops, and some classic island weather. Our first notable stop was Woss, a tiny town where we stretched our legs, admired the view from a logging road bridge, and enjoyed a little picnic next to the river—while rain continued to drizzle down.

🚙 Adventuring Down Logging Roads: Deep Forests, Wildlife Hopes & Real Wilderness 🛤️🌧️

We decided to venture off the main highway onto rugged logging roads—open for public use but definitely not for the faint of heart. With our Toyota RAV4 set to “rock and dirt” mode, we bounced along muddy, pothole-studded roads surrounded by towering trees and complete wilderness. Taking these roads gave us an authentic taste of Vancouver Island’s backcountry, with zero crowds and the possibility of spotting wildlife. We were on the lookout for elk (which still eluded us), but we reminisced about our amazing luck seeing three black bears and countless deer so far. The rain and mist made the landscape even more mysterious, and we truly felt immersed in the “real” Vancouver Island.

🦌 Lunch in the Wild & Logging Road Memories: Sandwiches, Old Trains & Hockey Nostalgia 🚂🥪

Lunch was a classic road trip affair: salami and cheese sandwiches, enjoyed next to an old logging train. The rustic setting added to the adventure, even as rain pattered on the car roof. The logging roads also brought back memories of childhood hockey trips, loading gear into logging trucks and heading to tiny towns for weekend games—true small-town Canadian nostalgia. For anyone wanting a genuine wilderness experience, we recommend exploring these less-traveled back roads. You’ll encounter unexpected lakes, rivers, and perhaps wildlife you’d never see from the highway.

🏞️ Scenic (and Wet!) Detours: Schoen Lake & Sayward 🚗🌧️

A “small” detour took us to Schoen Lake—beautiful and totally deserted, except for a soft rain falling and dark forest all around. With no campers or hikers in sight, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. These side trips, even when the weather’s dreary, reveal the wild heart of the island. Continuing on, we aimed for Sayward, another small community. Although the elk stayed hidden, we were delighted to spot a deer munching apples in someone’s garden—a cute reminder that nature’s always nearby on Vancouver Island.

🌲 Road Trip Reflections & Vancouver Island Travel Tips 📝🚦

Expect rain—embrace it! Island weather is unpredictable, but it’s part of the experience. Pack good rain gear, be flexible, and don’t let it stop you.

Take the logging roads for real adventure. A 4x4 or AWD vehicle makes these routes easier, but always drive carefully and watch for potholes.
