Berne Union Rally Stuns Northmor In District Final

A series of highs and lows for both teams over the last four frames of the Division 4 Central District Championship saw #4 Berne Union erase a 4-run deficit in the final inning to stun #3 Northmor with a 10-9 come-from-behind victory.

The game started slow on the scoreboard with both the Rockets and Golden Knights putting several runners in scoring position over the first three innings but failing to capitalize. Northmor led 1-0 before a costly error allowed a pair of Berne Union runs to score in the top of the fourth, and the Rockets would tack on two more runs with RBI by William Bolton and Nate Nemeth. Northmor would respond in the bottom half of the stanza, receiving RBI singles from Cooper Thomas and Caiden Martinez to pull within 4-3.

Later in the fifth, the Golden Knights pulled to within even at 5-5 on a deep fly ball to center by Drew Hammond that brought home a pair of runs. The momentum appeared to swing heavily in Northmor's favor in the following inning, getting out of a jam in the top of the sixth before taking advantage of some critical fielding woes by the Rockets.

A pair of singles and a walk would load the bases with 1-out for Cole Cuffman would put the Golden Knights in front on a sacrifice fly to center field. Then back-to-back errors by Berne Union allowed three more runs to score as Northmor took a commanding 9-5 cushion into the seventh needing just 3 outs to win the title.

The Rockets would capitalize on the Knight's 4th error of the game to pull within 9-6 just two batters into the frame, then traded 2-outs for a run but had nobody on base while trailing 9-7. A double and a single then put runners in scoring position for Hudson Gerken who sent a screamer to left that brought both runners home to tie the game. Cooper Mitchell broke the tie on the Rockets next at-bat on a line drive to score Gerken, deflating the Northmor dugout.

Berne Union would close out the amazing comeback to punch their ticket to Regionals, ending the Golden Knights' impressive season at 21-7. The Rockets will now advance to face Russia in the Sweet 16 at Springfield.
