This is the first song which I ever wrote and produced, almost forty eight years ago, in February 1975 in a cold wintry New York recording studio. The Exciters - Reaching For The Best became an instant classic, a 1975 song by The Exciters, written and produced by Herb Rooney and a new young producer, Ian Levine. The song was aimed at the British Northern Soul scene, but crossed over to the UK Singles Chart where it peaked at No. 31. It even has its own Wikipedia page. Dave MacAleer released it on Twentieth Century records, and it started my forty eight year recording career, and so I hold it in great affection and esteem. Herb Rooney and I recorded an entire Exciters album plus solo songs on Doris Jones, Carol Woods, and Tyrone Ashley, until it went very sour when Herb absconded with the studio funds causing me great embarrassment. I myself went on to produce five further Exciters songs with Brenda Reid. Her and Herb's son, Corey Rooney, went on to mentor Jennifer Lopez. Originally, the Exciters were an American pop music group of the 1960s. They were originally a girl group, with one male member, Herb Rooney, being added afterwards. At the height of their popularity the group consisted of lead singer Brenda Reid, Herb Rooney, Carolyn Johnson and Lillian Walker. Herb died in the early 1990s. Brenda and I put together a revenge song about him called "Snake In The Grass". After his death, she changed her tune and would hear no wrong spoken against him.
