One of the most important lessons you can learn in the Alaskan backcountry is that you have to adjust your perception of time and space. When you first walk up to a vast overlook like this on the Denali Highway, your first impression might be that there's nothing out there but trees and tundra. But you'd be mistaken.
The real secret to experiencing the wilderness is patience. If you just stand here long enough, with a good pair of binoculars and a watchful eye, the entire landscape begins to change. What appeared to be a static, empty scene slowly reveals itself to be full of movement and life. Things start to move.
It’s an incredible experience. You might spot a moose moving through the brush over here, a herd of caribou over there, or even a bear wandering in the distance. The Alaskan wilderness is not empty; it's just very, very big, and its inhabitants are experts at blending in. This video is a perfect example. A moment of patience can reward you with a magical sight, like young moose calves taking their first playful runs through the forest. You never know what you'll see.
