Japan Sinkhole Swallows Truck: Rescue Underway to Save 74 YO Driver | Vantage with Palki Sharma | N18G
A massive sinkhole has appeared in Japan's Saitama city. The sinkhole is 10 metres wide, and 10 metres deep. A burst sewage pipe reportedly washed away the soil and sand beneath a major road intersection, causing the sinkhole to form. The road gave way when a truck was passing over it, swallowing the truck whole. The truck driver is reportedly a 74-year-old man. He survived the accident and was in touch with rescue workers for the initial few hours. But the rescue crew lost contact with him as his cabin started filling up with soil and debris. Rescue workers used a crane to get most of the truck out, but failed to retrieve the driver's cabin. Meanwhile, a second sinkhole appeared, causing additional complications. 200 households have been evacuated as the rescue work drags on after 36 hours.
