Violin teacher at the Pio Ospedale della Pietà, a charitable institute for young girls, Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) took advantage of having an ensemble of quality musicians to compose concertos, for which he remains today the best known. He is particularly known for his four violin concertos Le Quattro Stagioni opus 8, each of which describes a season of the year. These works open the collection Il cimento dell'armonica e dell'invenzione, published in Amsterdam in 1725. Their amusing mimicry (birdsong, barking, rain, storm) intrigued the European public of the time. However, after this first moment of fame , the concertos fell into oblivion until 1921 when they were rediscovered and replayed. Later, the violinist Louis Kaufman recorded them and, through its numerous film appearances, the Four Seasons became familiar on the silver screen and then in advertisements. Broadcast in this way, the works once again seduce the general public, with their speed of execution – ever faster –, their typically baroque contrasts and their mimicry of elements that are well known to all.

This evening, the Russian violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky offers his version of these well-known works, with his ensemble La Voce Strumentale.
