Between August and November 1991, the Croatian town of Vukovar became the site of one of the most devastating urban battles in Europe since the Second World War. Part of the Croatian War of Independence, the battle saw Yugoslav forces and Serbian paramilitaries attack the town, which was defended by Croatian troops and volunteers. The 87-day siege resulted in around 3,000 deaths and the near-total destruction of Vukovar. After the town’s fall, tens of thousands of non-Serb residents were forcibly expelled or subjected to ethnic cleansing. Presented here is a series of ITN reports covering the Battle of Vukovar and its aftermath.
